Outside the Box: Free Range Education
8 November – 1 December 2013
Opening Event / 7 November / 4-6pm
Outside the Box presents the culmination of a series of art workshops at MK Gallery led by artist Aaron Head for the Free Range Education group.
Free Range Education is a Milton Keynes-based social group that offers Home Educators access to a variety of different educational activities and events. Many home educating children from the area have been involved in the Outside the Box art project at MK Gallery, trying out new techniques to produce art work based on their chosen theme of nature.
Outside the Box describes the exhibition on many levels. Emmanuelle Sibley aged 13 explains, "Firstly, we are educated at home, which is different from most children; secondly nature is outside of the buildings or boxes we live in; and finally we have tried to think ‘outside the box’ when creating our art."
During the workshops, the children worked very hard together, whether they were making sculptures out of sand, birds out of second hand books, using acrylics to paint onto homemade tiles, or creating mountain landscapes out of cardboard. Laura Chisnall, aged 12 says "I have really enjoyed these sessions as they are very creative and I have got to do things that I've never done before!"
Hannah Gaunt, Learning Coordinator at MK Gallery commented, ‘We are delighted with how the exhibition has developed over the last year, and how the Free Range Education families have embraced artist Aaron Head's innovative and unusual approach to materials whilst really taking ownership of their ideas and artwork for the exhibition, which looks fantastic!’.
