Old Stratford Primary School:

Images of India

8 – 31 March 2013

Preview: 7 March 5.30-7pm / All Welcome

Images of India is an exhibition of collaborative work by children ages 8 and 9 from Old Stratford Primary School, Milton Keynes.

Over the last few months the pupils have been exploring a cross-curricular topic about India. In response to this theme, Year 4 and 5 pupils worked with Old Stratford School’s in-house artist Nichola Clarke to look in detail at the patterns, textures and vibrant colours that permeate Indian culture, exploring traditional textiles and the imagery and themes in Indian art and design. Using a range of media from recycled packaging to papier-mâché, the children created beautiful birds, puppet portraits in bright boxes, patterned paisleys, fabulous fabrics, exotic elephants and even a proud peacock.

Nichola Clarke has helped the children to delve into the vibrant world of Indian art and design, encouraging them to work collaboratively and independently to create their own playful interpretations of the artwork. The unique puppet portraits, which sit in recycled packaging ‘frames’, are beautifully painted with an impressive level of detail. The children have learned about textiles and the processes involved in printing decorative designs, and as a result have created fantastic floral and paisley patterns.

All the individual elements of the exhibition create an impressive display that celebrates the children’s creativity and the richness of Indian culture.

“I am delighted that our pupils are exhibiting at MK Gallery Project Space. Our commitment to the Arts has resulted in the school being awarded Artsmark Gold by the Arts Council for 12 consecutive years. We are extremely grateful for this special opportunity to showcase the work of our pupils and expertise of our staff. The children have loved learning about Indian culture, been totally inspired by Indian art and are very excited that their work is now on public display. We are very proud of their achievements and congratulate them on their success."  (Gill Tween, Headteacher , Old Stratford Primary School)

“The children have responded to the theme of Indian culture in imaginative and innovative ways, and were clearly inspired and excited by the traditional patterns, lively colours and use of metallic paints and reflective surfaces.” (Hannah Gaunt, Learning Coordinator at MK Gallery)
