Creative Classrooms

Friday 6 – Sunday 22 June 2014

Preview: Thursday 5 June /  5-7pm / All Welcome

This month MK Gallery Project Space presents Creative Classrooms, an exhibition of work by pupils ages 7-11 from Two Mile Ash School, Milton Keynes.

Over the last three months MK Gallery and Two Mile Ash School have collaborated on delivering a series of artist-led workshops for teachers at the school. Working across the different year groups, artists Sophie Bennett, Aaron Head, Thom Rees and Sarah Wright have provided teachers with creative resources and ways of approaching key learning outcomes with their pupils. Since then, the teachers have incorporated the suggested methods and approaches into their lessons, resulting in them exploring the Greeks through clay, cityscapes through experimental painting, the Tudors through portraiture and the World Cup through colourful installations.  A selection of some of the resulting artwork will be on display at MK Gallery Project Space from 6 – 22 June.

Speaking of the project Nyla Pradel, Art Coordinator at Two Mile Ash School said: "It was great to see how working with contemporary artists has prompted the teachers to try something new in the classroom and enriched the art curriculum at our school.

Hannah Gaunt, Formal Learning Manager at MK Gallery added: “We are delighted with the outcomes of the Creative Classrooms project with Two Mile Ash School, and with the enthusiastic response from participating teachers. We believe projects such as this, which offer practical, artist-led professional development opportunities for educators, are a fantastic way of encouraging and enabling teachers working across the curriculum to incorporate creative practice into their everyday lessons.

MK Gallery has delivered this project in it’s capacity as an active member of the Milton Keynes Creative Learning Network (MKCLN), a cross-artform consortium of local artists and organisations who are committed to developing opportunities for arts education in Milton Keynes. MKCLN activities include teacher Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops, Arts Award training and networking opportunities.
