Project Space

7 - 30 March 2014

Preview: Thursday 6 March / 6.30pm - 8pm / All welcome

MK Gallery Project Space presents an exhibition by Milton Keynes University of the Third Age (MKU3A) including storyboards representing group activities, alongside audio visual presentations, together with examples of members’ work, including counted cross-stitch, quilting, lace-making, art and photography.

Universities of the Third Age (U3As) in the UK are independent, self–help organisations run by volunteer members; the word “university” is used in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue learning in all its forms.  MKU3A encourages people in Milton Keynes and the surrounding area, no longer in full time paid employment, to keep active in mind and body, by sharing their knowledge, skills and experiences.  With ‘first age’ learning occurring at school, college and university, “second age” learning being skills learnt at work, U3A supports “third age” learning through different interest groups, where people can pursue or study whatever they enjoy, without the pressures of formal exams.

Stephen Royle of MKU3A said, “Nobody has to stop learning just because they have stopped working. Learning is interpreted in the broadest sense, with subjects ranging from Art, Music, Economics, Lacemaking and Writing to pretty well anything in between. Subjects don’t have to be academic - hundreds enjoy more physical activities such as Dancing, Cycling and Yoga.”

Volunteer Ambassadors for MKU3A will be available at the exhibition to talk to visitors and provide first-hand experience of the benefits of membership, together with details of groups running in the Milton Keynes area. On selected afternoons, demonstrations of some of the MKU3A activities will take place.
