Preview: Thursday 1 May / 6pm - 7.30pm / All welcome

This month MK Gallery Project Space presents Art and Dementia, an exhibition of work created by people with dementia and their carers.

Over the last year, Shenley Wood Village in Milton Keynes and Arts for Health (Milton Keynes) have worked in partnership to provide opportunities for people with dementia and their carers to participate in art workshops. Supported by a grant from the Milton Keynes Community Foundation, the workshops aim to help people with dementia continue to lead an active and fulfilled life.

People with dementia are able to enjoy art as it triggers instant reactions and responses which can override the stress and confusion of memory loss. People affected by dementia can also quickly become isolated and lose any sense of their own identity. Art is a great way for people to hold on to a sense of their own personal identity and it also provides a valuable opportunity to get out, meet people and make friends.

Three artists - Thom Rees, Amanda Hottinger and Cathy Ebbels – provided the project workshops. Thom Rees introduced the group to drawing and printmaking techniques using the sculpture of Henry Moore as inspiration. Amanda Hottinger inspired the group to work with paint, colour and collage by looking at the work of artists such as Matisse and Kandinsky. Cathy Ebbels taught the group mosaic techniques and everyone made their own individual mosaic based on vintage fabric designs.

One of the carers who attended said "My wife, who has quite advanced Alzheimer’s, was very closely supervised with care and consideration. She was made to feel she was capable and able. As a Carer, I felt very comfortable knowing that she was being so well supervised and although sitting alongside her, I felt able to ‘do my own thing’ and that was a really nice feeling.
