Absence + Presence: Edith Garcia
4 – 28 November 2010
Los Angeles born Edith Garcia is currently artist-in-residence at Leon School and Sports College, Bletchley and Researcher at the Royal College of Art in London. Inspired by everyday life, her work combines installation and sculpture, and currently derives from what she refers to as 'contemporary monsters'.
In her new series Absence and Presence Garcia explores the relationship between the human form and abstraction. In erasing features, removing limbs, expanding scale, and joining together internal and external bodily parts, she creates three-dimensional figures and objects in clay that move away from familiar images of the human form.
In July 2011, MK Gallery Project Space will present an exhibition of ceramic work created by pupils at Leon School during Garcia’s residency.
MK Gallery is hosting a closing reception for the artist’s Absence + Presence exhibition on Thursday 25 November, coinciding with the Milton Keynes Community Foundation Arts Bursary Presentation Evening taking place in the main gallery from 6 – 8pm. Both events are free and everyone is welcome to attend.
