Platform 2013 Award
2013 Recipient Announcement: 7 November at Turner Contemporary, Margate
Following its successful launch last year, MK Gallery is delighted to once again be participating in the South East Platform Graduate Award in collaboration with Aspex, Portsmouth; Modern Art Oxford; and Turner Contemporary, Margate.
An initiative of CVAN South East the Platform Award aims to highlight the wealth of talent emerging from the region’s Higher Education Institutions and provides that much needed helping hand to artists embarking upon their professional careers. Listening to last year’s Platform artists, this unique opportunity to work with large public institutions with international reputations, so soon after graduating, gives those involved a significant advantage in making that all important transition from student to professional artist.
Curatorial and learning staff from the four participating galleries work closely with their local art colleges to offer graduates the chance to be included in the Platform exhibitions. This includes working closely with gallery staff at every stage of the process and, in doing so, the graduates gain valuable skills and insight into what it takes to work as a professional artist. Inclusion in the exhibitions also means that they are eligible for the Platform Award – a £2,500 bursary and a 12-month bespoke programme of professional development.
Joella Wheatley, Platform Award winner 2012, will be included in a mixed painting show next year at the De La Warr Pavilion. She will also be featured in an interview on Frame and Reference. To find out about the experiences of six of last year’s selected artists, read more at Where Are They Now?
