This month's Project Space presents an exhibition of work by Milton Keynes school pupils, created with Los Angeles born artist Edith Garcia during her year-long residency at the Leon School and Sports College, Bletchley.
The exhibitors have produced a diverse range of ceramic works inspired by Garcia’s work, by their own personal lives, by the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’, graffitti, comic books and urban culture.
With little or no prior experience of working in clay, the students enjoyed developing both their drawing and ceramic skills to produce some delightfully innovative pieces. Speaking of the residency, Edith Garcia said: “The Leon School learners brought a fresh and energetic approach to working with clay, without artistic preconceptions.
They created some amazingly interesting results by incorporating found objects in their work and by reconsidering past examples from art history from Picasso to Jeff Koons.
Edith Garcia presented a solo exhibition herself in MK Gallery Project Space in November 2010. Entitled Absence + Presence, her exhibition comprised her latest series of works exploring the relationship between the human form and abstraction.
