Film Screening

Thursday 3 February / Starts at 6.30pm / Free

Matt Smith is an artist based in the North East of England. He is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD in Fine Art at Newcastle University.

Smith’s practice is concerned with the “small traumas” of modernity and alternatives to, or escapes from such experience. These themes are often explored through a dialogue with the landscapes of northern Britain.

His use of lens-based media stems from an interest in relationships between modernity and the natural world. As David Campany suggests, “The camera [can be] understood as nature’s industrial other but also as an apparatus with a particular affinity with organic form. It [can] produce ‘natural signs’, images as apparently unmediated and spontaneous as nature itself."

Of the video pieces shown here, all are PhD-related “works-in-progress”, with the exception of Paper Lanterns and Sound of Sleat, two of his earliest films.

Screening includes:

Do Granddads’ dream of celluloid flamingos? (work in progress)

Mottled Screen (work in progress)

(Re)Play (work in progress)

Paper Lanterns (2003)

Sound of Sleet (2002)
