Sound Art

Agency Collaboration: Clare Gasson and Salome Voegelin

Thursday 2 February 2012 / 6.30pm / Free

Straddling the line between art and cinema Clare Gasson’s texts create a space that is densely cinematic where sound and image layer, building in intensity, to create a scene into which we find ourselves immersed. Words spoken by one or more voices, competing against and speaking in unison with pre-recorded text serve to illustrate visual experiences through narrative. The performed experiences are enhanced by the atmospheric and dramatic settings which are often created by simple lamps or candles. Clare Gasson will perform two pieces:

5mhm a song, performance and score

…the traveller walking walking walking through... 2010 is a sound-poem that takes a balladic or song-like form, and was written in response to a visit to Bath - walking and experiencing the City, and thinking about the rhythm of walking and of waulking songs. Waulking songs are the work songs of women waulking the cloth, and like miners' or seafaring songs, the rhythm of the songs - designed to assist the process of labour - provides a basis for undertaking physical activity. In this case, the activity is walking. Like working songs themselves, Gasson's texts don't just belong on the page although the notation of their rhythm and their sounds (often percussive, involving clicking, calls and echoes) is of interest to her, instead they lift off creating an immersive sonic, evocative and imaginistic space.

The traveller[...] was commissioned by Bridget Crone, Media Art Bath.

Clare Gasson - biography:
Clare Gasson’s practice springs from text – her own and those she finds on the walls of a city or in files in an archive.  She works in a variety of ways: from working with the voice, performance, film, photography, sculpture, city walks to writing scripts and scores. Her core concerns are around layering of minimal textural structures and event. Clare Gasson’s solo projects include:The River (performance) South London Gallery, (2011) … the traveller walking walking walking through … Media Art Bath commission (2010); Clare Gasson, Gimpel Fils, London (2008); A Little Light Music, Parker’s Box (with The Showroom), New York (2006).

Salomé Voegelin is a Swiss artist and writer based in London. She is the author of Listening to Noise and Silence: towards a Philosophy of Sound Art, Continuum, NY, 2010. The book engages with the emerging practice of sound art and the concurrent development of a discourse and theory of sound. It seeks to immerse the reader in concepts of listening to sound artwork and the everyday acoustic environment, to establish an aesthetics and philosophy of sound and to promote the notion of a sonic sensibility. Other recent writings include an article on Morton Feldman in the Wire 324, February 2011 issue, and an essay on durational radio for Kunstradio ORF Austria. On her blog she writes the experience of listening to the everyday.
