What is Contemporary Art?

Landscape towards Abstraction

15.2.2012

What is Contemporary Art?

A series of five illustrated talks exploring land, landscape and nature in contemporary art practice

Landscape towards Abstraction in Painting

Wednesday 15 February / 6.30 - 7.45pm

This lecture begins by exploring the roots of northern Romantic landscape painting (as outlined by Robert Rosenblum in Modern painting and the Northern Romantic Tradition) and its influence on later modernist abstract painting. The influence of postmodernism appeared to place both modernist abstraction and landscape painting in a more difficult critical position and the second part of this lecture will look at some of the developments in landscape painting and abstraction since the publication of Rosenblum’s book in 1975 using examples of key contemporary painters and my own work in this area.
