What is Contemporary Art?

Landscape. Change. Photography

What is Contemporary Art?

A series of five illustrated talks exploring land, landscape and nature in contemporary art practice

Landscape. Change. Photography

Wednesday 22 February / 6.30 - 7.45pm

The talk explores how artists apply photographic tools in various ways and generate new forms to respond to change in landscape and its representation through the image.  The illustrations used in the talk signal a range of artistic strategies to image making, from the capitalization of the inherent evidential qualities of the topographic image through to the capacity of images to be re/constructed and manipulated.

The time period being discussed has been chosen to allow discussion of the transition in photographic culture from the analogue to the digital environment and the fact that images can now be encountered on the wall, on the page and on the screen.

The scope of the talk includes discussion of work from artists where their intent stems from a personal perspective to work which inherently taps into issues from a global perspective.

Andrew Langford is Reader in Fine Art and Design at The University of Northampton. He teaches Fine Art and photography at undergraduate - post graduate and doctoral levels and manages the research activities in the Department of Art, Fashion and Design. Andrew has received many grants in support of his practice led research over the past ten years from the Arts and Humanities Research Council . His interests are in the interrogation of the visual presentation of nature, landscape and the general environment in the context of associated scientific investigation, and in the radical changes in the human use of the landscape (and the issues that arise from this). His recent work has focussed on the desert landscape of Almeria in Southern Spain.
