The Future City Debate: Plan MK - Shaping our Future

Presented by the Fred Roche Foundation

Thursday 13 November / 7pm / Doors 6.30pm / Free

Pre-booking essential via Eventbrite

Building on the success of last December’s talks that accompanied the Future City exhibition, MK Gallery collaborates with The Fred Roche Foundation to host several more in the coming months, aiming to stimulate creative discussion and debate around subjects that are vital to the growth and vitality of Milton Keynes

Plan:MK, when completed, will set out policy for how Milton Keynes will grow and develop over the next fifteen to twenty years. To start this plan making process the Council has prepared a series of topic papers on subjects that include housing, economic growth, town centres, transport, culture and climate change. The Council wants your help in understanding what issues the plan should cover and your views on how the council should approach these issues. Comments can be submitted via the online consultation portal or by emailing

Watch a short video about Plan:MK, produced by MK Council.

This talk will address the following questions:- this seems like a good start but how do we go forward from this point and arrive at a definitive plan and one that is fit for the future? There are challenges and unanswered questions. How do we create a sound foundation for an all-inclusive society? Have we sufficient understanding of how new technologies will shape Milton Keynes in the future? How do we go about identifying a vision for the new plan? What is the process and what criteria should we judge this on?

The evening will start with an introduction on Plan:MK and the topic papers, followed by a panel discussion. There will also be an opportunity for questions to be asked from the floor. Please submit your question beforehand to Stuart Turner via

This talk will include a panel discussion made up of representatives from Milton Keynes Council including: Councillor Peter Marland, Leader of the Council; Councillor Mick Legg, Chair of the Plan:MK Advisory Group; and independent experts including Professor David Lock, CBE, MRTPI, Vice President of the Town and Country Planning Association; and Hilary Chipping, Head of Infrastructure, South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP).

November 2014

The Fred Roche Foundation celebrates the life of Fred Roche (1931-1992), who led the team in the 1970s who built the new city of Milton Keynes.  The Foundation endeavors to keep his spirit of creative exploration, innovation and vision alive in Milton Keynes.

He believed in the power – or rather the duty – of architecture to improve society.  If Milton Keynes is one person’s creation, it was Fred Roche’s”.  (Stephen Bayley, The Guardian)
