How do we understand and relate to art from an earlier generation? In this talk Mark Wilsher discusses his encounter with the sculpture of Bernard Schottlander, from looking through papers and notes in the archive, to his large scale public works in London and Milton Keynes. Considering changing approaches to making from the 1960s to today, and finding points of understanding between generations. Online images of a Schottlander piece in High Park, Toronto are the basis for a new two-second film considering issues of sculpture’s presence and physicality.

Mark Wilsher recently co-curated the exhibition Artist Boss at the New Art Centre, featuring work by Anthony Caro and his studio assistants. He is currently researching the representation of contemporary art in the media and the way art is used. He has exhibited his own works at the Henry Moore Institute, the ICA & Chelsea Space, and in 2015 staged the large-scale participatory project Everyone is an Curator at the Minories Galleries, Colchester. He teaches at Norwich University of the Arts and is a regular contributor to Art Monthly.
