MK Forty Tower is a temporary artwork commissioned from de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects (dRMM) to mark the 40th anniversary of Milton Keynes. Sited immediately in front of the Gallery, visitors are welcome to climb the 19m tower to take in panoramic views of Milton Keynes and landscape beyond. And at the foot of the tower, visitors can enjoy a fair trade coffee at MK40 Coffee Bar, housed in a shipping container with an interior commission, Logo 32, by Richard Woods.

De Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects (dRMM) create innovative, non-standard

architecture. MK Forty Tower and dRMM: The Culture of Construction, the accompanying exhibition in Milton Keynes Gallery’s Project Space, demonstrates dRMM’s award-winning use of cross-laminated timber technology, facilitating elegant, quality design using sustainable architectural solutions.

The Tower provides a deliberate contrast with the dominant horizontality of much of the low-rise architecture in Milton Keynes, offering previously unseen views of the surrounding city and park from it’s top platform.

At ground level, the shipping container in which part of the prefabricated tower was transported to site has been converted into a temporary coffee shop, with an interior designed by artist Richard Woods, and bespoke furniture made by dRMM using off-cuts from apertures cut into the walls of the Tower – a huge ‘M’ and ‘K’, ‘4’ and ‘0’.

The display in the Project Space focuses on other projects that have used the same timber building techniques as the Tower, including Kingsdale School in South London and Naked House, a digitally produced flat-packed home.
