Elizabeth Magill

Recent Paintings

17.7. – 12.9.2004

This exhibition presented a large selection of recent and new paintings by Elizabeth Magill. Since coming to public attention in the 1990 British Art Show, Magill has shown remarkable innovation in her relationship to paint, continually inventing and re-inventing her use of the medium.

The artist is most celebrated for her landscape paintings, in which she revels in a confident and experimental treatment of the picture surface. She pours, bleeds and rubs swathes of colour into the canvas, working like a photographer to expose the latent image.

Combining abstract mark-making with figuration, the paintings’ distressed and scarred surface create an immediate friction. Loaded with a haunting beauty, these paintings are the stuff of imagination and memory.
