School Art Now 02 & BP School Art Challenge

29 June - 7 July 2002

Two exhibitions showcasing the creativity of children and young people from schools in and around Milton Keynes are to fill the walls of MK G. Both exhibitions, which are supported by BP, run for a full nine days, including a Monday when MK G is usually closed.

School Art Now 02 includes work by school children ages 5-18 from 45 state funded schools in Milton Keynes. The exhibition, which occupies MK G’s Middle and Long Galleries, presents a wide range of media - from paintings, drawings, pastels, prints and digital images, to sculpture, textiles and wall-hangings. Several schools submitted work using recycled materials. The subject matter embraces landscape, portraiture, abstraction and still life. Organised by MK G and the MK Arts Education Forum, with support from Stantonbury Campus, it builds on the success of last year’s School Art Now exhibition. A new feature this year is that the co-organisers have funded 15 artists in residence to work with local schools to prepare work for the exhibition. It has also been supported with training sessions for teachers in printmaking, drawing, ceramics and keeping a sketchbook.

The BP Artwork Challenge exhibition in MK G’s Cube Gallery presents work by young people ages 10-19 from six schools in and around Milton Keynes. All the exhibits are entries in the annual BP Artwork Challenge competition, which is just one of the many activities run for members of the BP School Links scheme. This year’s theme is Energy in our World and following the exhibition at MK G the works will transfer to BP’s Witan Gate Offices in central Milton Keynes, where they will judged, installed for a year and then returned to the young artists.
