Tim Noble & Sue Webster: Ghastly Arrangements

Tim Noble & Sue Webster are two of the most successful and intriguing artists on the UK contemporary art scene. Fresh from the success of their recent show Instant Gratification in Los Angeles, they have just opened a UK version called Ghastly Arrangements at Milton Keynes Gallery. Their work includes unusually formed shadow pieces, casting self portrait silhouettes made out of cash, or artificial fruit or flowers, and a huge 20 foot neon flashing sign spelling out the work Forever.

Following the overwhelmingly positive public response to Ghastly Arrangements during its first weekend, national critics are now voicing their support for the show. Waldemar Januszczak said in The Sunday Times yesterday:

Thank heavens for Noble & Webster…..Without this pair of vulgar, loud, sickish self portraitists, there would be a sizeable hole in our country’s post-YBA [Young BritishArtists] terrain. Without them, nothing much of note would be happening right now.

Charles Darwent, in The Independent on Sunday, joined several members of the public in applauding the 20-foot light work which occupies the main gallery space:

In the case of Forever, [Noble & Webster] pull off their biggest coup yet by bridging theapparently unbridgeable gap between Martin Creed and Liberace.

The Daily Telegraph (11 May 2002) called Noble & Webster “two of the best and most successful British artists to have emerged in the nineties” while The Times (4 May 2002) credited them with a “careful artfulness”. Art Review marked Noble & Webster’s MK G show by putting them on the cover of this month’s issue and publishing an interview with them.
