Milton Keynes was formally designated a New Town in January 1967 and aspires to city status. It's distinctive grid road system, with three parallel boulevards (Avebury, Midsummer and Silbury Boulevards) in the city centre, make travelling by car or bus generally quick and easy.  A network of more than 270 kilometres of Redways, provides safe routes for cyclists and pedestrians. The city has an impressive range of sports and leisure facilities, extensive shopping, bars, restaurants and theatres.  The city's business and leisure tourism service is provided by Destination Milton Keynes.

The city has a large collection of public sculptures, one of the biggest in the UK, with striking works by acclaimed artists all around the city.

 

Heritage

Explore MK's surprising history. Tour Bletchley Park, the secret headquarters of the ingenious World War II code-breakers, now a museum attracting worldwide visitors or trace the intriguing history of the MK  region from 1800 to the present day at Milton Keynes Museum.  You can explore MK's Heritage by bicycle; download the Heritage Cycle Tours:  Trail A, Trail B, Trail C, and Trail D. Music and Performing Arts
Adjacent to MK Gallery, MK Theatre offers a diverse programme, from West End musicals and plays to ballet, comedy and Glyndebourne touring opera. On the city perimiter, in Wavendon Village, The Stables Theatre. established by Cleo Laine and John Dankworth and currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, offers world class music. Milton Keynes City Orchestra offers regular concerts, and Stantonbury Campus Theatre's includes lively Theatre4Kids s part of its regular proigramme. The Bowl, the city's 65,000 seat venue, plays host to superstars like David Bowie, Robbie Williams, Take That and Bon Jovi.

Parks and Open Spaces

MK has more than 4,500 acres of parkland, woodland, lakes and rivers. Campbell Park, beside MK Gallery, is the green oasis right in the heart of the city and nearby Willen Lake has more than 180 acres of lakes and parkland.
