This show brings together 150 early works from the 1980s by the American artist James Welling, charting the development of his experimental and abstract photography.

James Welling

Saturday 13 October / 2pm / Free

 

Hear LA based artist James Welling (b.1951) talk about his photographic practice and work in his MK Gallery exhibition, The Mind on Fire.  Welling's work is held in major museum collections worldwide and he currently heads the photography area of the Art Department of UCLA, in California.

 

The talk will be preceded by a pre-bookable Photographic Portfolio Review session suitable for students through to experienced photographers, with one-to-one advice from an expert panel.

Historical  Abstract  Films

Welling's intense exploration of photography informs this month's video space programme on MK Gallery's first floor.  Focusing on abstraction and the material quality of film itself, this historical programme will present a small selection of exploratory works by early artist filmmakers, including Harry Smith, Paul Sharitis and Stan Brakhage.

Children and Families

This month in Mini Makers explore stencilling, photography and elements of transparency, semi-abstract photographs, drawing with light in sun printing, and fun with Polaroids. Free, every Saturday from 1 - 3pm, ages 4+. 

 

In Start the Art sessions for parents with toddlers, this month use collage to create James Welling inspired artwork, meet storyteller John Kirk, experiment with sun printing techniques, and found objects. Free, every Tuesday from 11am - 12noon.

Station X moves to Bletchley Park

The Station X exhibition, which was first presented at MK Gallery Project Space earlier this year is to be included in Ghost Train, new exhibition at Bletchley Park.  

 

Visitors from MK postcodes can view the exhibition free from 6-9 September during the Heritage Open Days weekend.

Stian Ådlandsvik, Untitled 1

Stian Ãlandsvik at Stoke Mandeville

Coinciding with the current London 2012 Paralympic Games, a selection of Norwegian artist Stian Ådlandsvik ’s collages are on view at Stoke Mandeville Hospital (29  August - 23 September) before they transfer to Bucks New University.

 

This work was first shown in July as part of Ådlandsvik's exhibition Take These Hands in MK Gallery Project Space. 

Winner Max age 6

Pushwagner Prize Draw Winner

Max Holland aged six was the winning entrant in the Gallery's Pushwagner exhibition free prize draw for visitors who completed a gallery survey.

 

Lucky Max has won a copy of the Pushwagner exhibition catalogue (worth £35) and a pair of tickets to the Edvard Munch exhibition at Tate (worth £28).
