Start the Art

Parent & Toddler Sessions, 0-4 year olds  

Every Tuesday / 11am – 12noon / Free

Children must be accompanied by an adult.


This summer Start the Art showcases a variety of art forms from our current exhibition, MK Calling.  With 100 artists in the show there is a wealth of styles, themes and techniques for you to explore with your little ones.


Tuesday 23 July: Exploring all things 3-dimensional 

Tuesday 30 July: Cut, stick and colour your way to creating 2D and 3D works of art 

Tuesday 6 August:  Explore patterns, shapes, line, tone and colour through abstract painting 

Tuesday 13 August:  A focus on different forms of craft based work 

Tuesday 20 August:  A ‘green’ session including creating your own natural environments. 

Tuesday 27 August: Mark-making to explore the joys of drawing 

Tuesday 3 September: A fun session using light, projection and sound

Over the summer we welcome a whole host of artists and MK based groups to share some fabulous projects and skills.  Come along week on week to try your hand at, and learn, some new techniques.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.


Saturday 20 July: Drumming with Kakatsitsi 

This session by MK Festival Fringe runs from 2-4pm today / £2 per child and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Workshops

Family Workshops for ages 7+

Every Friday throughout August / 10am-12noon and 2-4pm / Free


Each Friday we welcome one of five MK Calling artists to share their skills and take up the challenge to create a one-day artwork.  They all have very distinctive styles of working, and each invite you to come along to help create some fantastic collaborative art projects over the summer holidays.  Week on week you can discover the joys of being an artist and take away some new skills too.  Suitable for children aged 7+.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

An exploratory session inspired by folklore and myth


Friday 9 August: Discover artist Giulia Ricci

A creative session inspired by drawing and abstract painting 


Friday 16 August: Discover artist Lee Farmer

An unusual session exploring Lee’s fascination of working with sugar craft


Friday 23 August: Discover artist Helene Sorensen

Join an imaginary tale about a farmer and an ark style boat to create a 3D artwork


Friday 30 August: Discover artist Saliha Elhoussaini

Explore the drawing processes involved in the creation of detailed works

Arts Award

Start your Discover or Explore Arts Award now.

Have you considered signing up to achieve a Discover or Explore Arts Award this summer?  Help your award off to a flying start by taking part in MK Gallery’s Summer Family workshops which offer numerous opportunities for children 7+ to engage with artists and learn new skills. We have a number of Arts Award trained practitioners who can support your child’s Arts Award journey. If you wish to work towards your Discover or Explore Arts Award at MK Gallery you MUST register your interest with vmayes@mkgallery.org in order to get your Arts Log and further information.  Please note that an administration cost of £10 (Arts Award Discover) and £15 (Arts Award Explore) applies to take part in either award with MK Gallery.

A British Bake-off

Join our summer challenge to design and make your own amazing cake for our ‘British Bake-Off" This competition is open to all cake decorators, from total beginners to established masters, as well as culinary and cake decorating students, children, families and groups. To take part register online at www.mkgallery.org by 12noon on Friday 9 August

If you attend any of our family sessions at MK Gallery we invite you to feedback your comments in order that we can continually enhance and develop our programme. Please contact vmayes@mkgallery.org who, over the coming months, will be bringing together a Family Focus Group to help evaluate our current activities and shape future provisions.
