Every October over 200,000 people across 15 countries participate in drawing events to mark the annual Big Draw, and MK Gallery provides thematically linked events and activities for families to enjoy.


This year, MK-based arts project The Drawing Machine have been helping us celebrate Big Draw month by introducing our Mini Maker visitors to the huge variety of drawing techniques and styles that can be enjoyed simply by picking up a pencil. Today you can draw and create your own doodle island, using coloured crayons and pens, sticky backed plastic, newspaper, cardboard and glue.

The joys of drawing can be enjoyed at any age so come along and  introduce your toddler to a range of drawing techniques and experiences. Today printmaker Thom Rees will introduce you and your toddler to a number of ways of creating line, texture and tone by exploring simple mark-making and printmaking techniques.

The Big Draw Grand Finale

An event for children and families in Middleton Hall, thecentre:mk

For the second year running The Drawing Machine hosts the finale for The Big Draw.  Offering a full day of exciting, free workshops.  led by local creative organisations, this event will provide something for the whole family.


Between 10am and 1pm MK Gallery will be providing activities for parents with toddlers to experiment with materials and explore the joys of drawing together.

Wizard of Oz Family Workshops

Friday 1 November / 10am-12noon & 2-4pm

Free drop-in sessions for children aged 7+ and their families


Come along and explore the wonderful Wizard of Oz for a Halloween take on this old favourite!  A collaboration between artists Aaron Head and Sophie Cullinan, these workshops are inspired by themes from the film, with particular emphasis on the darker elements of the storyline. 


The afternoon session will be followed promptly by a short, free performance of a medley of routines from the hit musical Wicked,  performed by 16 students (ages 8-14) who have been participating in a 3 day musical theatre course at Milton Keynes Theatre working with industry professionals Scott Richie and Matthew Reeve.


The afternoon concludes with Family Film Screenings of Wizard of Oz films. These are free but pre-booking essential.  See below for details.

Project Space Workshops

MK Gallery Project Space hosts monthly exhibitions of contemporary visual art by individuals or groups based in Milton Keynes.These workshops complement the current exhibition, This is (my) Freedom (4 October - 3 November 2013).  Although free, places are limited, so pre-booking is essential for all Project Space Workshops on 01908 676900. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

An adventure in the art of cookery with Asma Awan and Yaw Asiyama.

Two workshops led by two poets.  Come along and enjoy a fun poetry session led by Lisa Lovell, Yaw Asiyama and one mystery guest!

Call Outs

Call for MK Memorabilia

Do you have a story about moving to Milton Keynes?  Do you have a fond memory of a space, place or an architectural setting?  Or perhaps you have an object, book or photograph which represents a Milton Keynes memory for you?  In advance of our Future City exhibition (opening 7 December), we invite you to take part by proposing an object or story for inclusion in the exhibition.  Our Cube Gallery space will host a collection of memorabilia gathered from the Milton Keynes Community, focusing on the ‘social history of MK’ so we’d love to hear from you if you have something to share.  Please contact Victoria Mayes for more details or to participate via vmayes@mkgallery.org. Inclusion is subject to selection.  Deadline Friday 15 November 2013.


Call for Collectors

In January 2014 our Project Space will become a collector’s heaven as we explore ‘The Art of Collecting’, to coincide with our new year exhibition, Treasures in MK.  We invite all Buckinghamshire collectors to propose their collections for inclusion in the Project Space display, be it a small quirky collection or a theme you developed to a large scale over a number of years.  For further information or to share your collection please emailvmayes@mkgallery.org With limited exhibition space inclusion is subject to selection. Deadline for proposals Monday 16 December 2013.
