We are delighted that 6a architects, the practice MK Gallery has appointed to design its building expansion, have been shortlisted for Designs of the Year 2014. They received their nomination in the Architecture category for their façade for renowned British fashion designer Paul Smith, on Albemarle Street, London.

The Designs of the Year awards draw together examples of cutting-edge innovation and original talent; showcasing the very best in global Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphic, Product and Transport design.

6a architects has emerged as one of the leading young architectural practices in the UK. Founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001 after meeting at the Royal College of Art, 6a first came to public attention for its subtle and inventive use of materials in the transformation of existing buildings into spaces for contemporary art.

In describing 6a's design for the Paul Smith façade Designs of the Year said: "The cast iron used for this facade references London street furniture and creates a sharp contrast to the neighbouring Georgian town houses. A sinuous pattern of interlocking circles puts an abstract spin on a classic Regency shape, while curved windows nod to the glass in nearby arcades".

All of the nominated designs go on display at the Design Museum, in an exhibition open from 26 March to 25 August 2014. Find out more
