Are you aged 4 to 19 and a budding filmmaker? MK Gallery has launched MK Young Filmmaker of the Year 2016, an exciting competition which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Milton Keynes Community Foundation and provides the opportunity to develop new, or showcase, existing work.

Carl Mason, Project Assistant for MK Young Filmmaker, discusses the competition: "As a young filmmaker based in Milton Keynes I have always wished for a stronger emphasis on proactive arts and film development in the local community, so this year we are pleased to announce MK Young Filmmaker of the Year, with kind support from the Milton Keynes Community Foundation and delivered in association with Independent Cinema MK.

MK Gallery is inviting young people across Milton Keynes to produce and submit a short film up to 3-minutes in length of any genre in response to the competition theme, to provide the opportunity to showcase new or existing work. As a team of creative people we hope MK Young Filmmaker of the Year will inspire the next generation of artists from within Milton Keynes.

We are asking entrants to consider how they might respond creatively to the theme: City Club - the name originally given to a national leisure complex planned for Central Milton Keynes in the 1970s. This opportunity is open to anyone between the ages of 4-19 years old, and entrants can take part as individual filmmakers or as part of a school, afterschool club or as a group submission.

The winners plus a selection of entries will have their worked screened in the MK Gallery Project Space and across Milton Keynes at the end of the year with various prizes awarded in four age categories: 4 to 6 years, 7 to 10 years, 11 to 14 years and 15 to 19 years.

Anyone interested in taking part should first download the Young Filmmaker Pack from the MK Gallery website, share with those collaborating and complete a registration form. For further information please email

As a local young artist based in Milton Keynes it is fantastic to have this support for local young people, to help find their passion for the creative industries; and I am so happy to be involved in helping to provide this opportunity to the local community!"

Filmmaking Masterclasses for ages 16+ will be held at the Gallery on Friday 5 and Friday 19 August from 10am - 4pm. Tickets cost £5 and can be booked here or by telephoning the Information Desk on 01908 676 900.
