July 2014 Video Space

Walk In and Out of N.S.R.D

Curated by Perros Negros and Egija Insule

1 - 31 July 2014

A looped screening in the first floor Video Space throughout advertised gallery opening hours. Access via stairs or lift.

A selection of videos made in the 1980s by a Latvian experimental music group with new age and new wave influences can be seen in MK Gallery Video Space this June. Serving as something of a time machine, the videos’ sequences mix fashion, music and public events, transporting the viewer back to a country that at the time formed part of the Soviet Union and was barely in cultural dialogue with Western Europe.

The videos document performances that lasted entire days and nights. As music becomes a document for time, time in their work becomes central, and as a result, understanding the perception of it in relation to social interactions and politics in those days brings to mind - instead of nostalgia - traces of an attitude of ease, and captured moments drawn by focussing on new feelings when making one’s own space for art.

Presented for the first time in the UK at MK Gallery, this video programme is curated by Perros Negros and Egija Inzule with support of the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art. This screening will be the first larger presentation of the work of NSRD (Latvian: "Restoration Workshop of Unprecedented Feelings") outside of Latvia.

Running time: TBC
