The Secret Life of Edward James (1975)

10 - 30 April 2014

A looped screening in the first floor Video Space throughout advertised gallery opening hours.  Access via stairs or lift.

Melanie Smith’s film Xilitla (2010), currently on view in  the Cube Gallery, poetically explores the ruins of the surreal architectural follies at  Las Pozas in the Mexican jungle, constructed by the British aristocrat, poet and early Surrealist patron Edward James. To complement this artwork,  this month’s Video Space programme presents George Melly’s 1975 documentary charting James’ eccentric life – from his early days at West Dean in West Sussex  to his lifelong friendships with Salvador Dali, René Magritte and Leonora Carrington, and finally to Xilitla, his adopted home for the last forty years of his life.

Running time: 55 mins
