The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever*

1 - 28 February 2014

First floor Video Space.  Total running time c.24 mins (looped)

Slavko Vorkapich – Moods of the Sea (1941)

Stan Douglas – Nutka (1996)

Marcel Broodthaers – A Voyage on the North Sea (1974)

The Middle Gallery in the current Treasures in MK exhibition features a selection of paintings and objects associated with the sea – from Maggie Hambling’s expressionistic painting of waves and Robert Cleveley’s astonishingly detailed 18th century  watercolour of Lord Howe’s flagship the ‘Queen Charlotte’  to a silver biscuit tin used aboard Admiral Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar.

The sea continues to inspire artists to this day and  this month’s video space programme draws together a selection of historical and contemporary films that explore this endlessly fascinating subject.
