Sarah Kay

Memento Mori

2 - 7 September 2011

Having recently turned thirty and become increasingly conscious of mortality and the preciousness of life, Kay’s latest body of work, entitled Memento Mori, comprises ten hand-printed digital images based on the face, and inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.

A final year student in Photographic Practice at the University of Northampton, Kay has a particular passion for traditional photographic methods, and is also concerned with the photograph as object in its own right.  In Memento Mori the images are distorted and damaged by extensive and elaborate processes involving experimentation and chance.

She manipulates each negative by processes such as scratching, burning, heating, freezing, bleaching, and even hanging them on a washing line to collect dirt.  In so doing she generates journeys and histories for each, image to represent the chance experiences and individuality of us all.
